Every year the Hilton Head Island Gullah Celebration plans fun-filled family events for each weekend during the month of February. These events include Taste of Gullah, Arts Crafts and Food Expo, Sweethearts Ball, the Gullah Music Series, and the Ol’ Fashioned Gullah Breakfast.

Along with these annual events, this year will also feature some new events such as the Fish Haul Creek Park 5k Run/Walk, The American South’s Connection to West Africa presented by The Gullah Institute and back by popular demand for the second year in the row, The Celebration of African American Authors.

7. A month long Gullah art exhibition and sale

The annual Art Exhibition and Sale is a display of original work by emerging and leading artists that represents the life of Gullah people on Hilton Head Island and the surrounding community. Depending on the day, you can meet one or some of the artist’s that are displaying or selling their work. It is especially great for art lovers and collectors of Gullah art.

This exhibition and sale is open during the entire month and duration of the Gullah Celebration.

6. A Walk or Run through history followed by a free health screening

HEALTH IS WEALTH! What’s better than free health screenings and a walk or run through history?

The Fish Haul Creek 5K takes you on a journey through historic Mitchelville on a marathon-style walk/run experience. It will also serve as a launch to the community wellness program, focused on providing the local and neighboring communities with educational tools to prevent health threats or address health threats sooner, in an effort to increase success of treatment and lower the risk of complications. Take advantage of the FREE health screenings at the 5k finish line.

5. Learn the American South’s connection to West Africa

History buff or not, this event will be great learning experience for all in attendance.

For thousands of years Africans were agriculturists who grew rice in West African. As the America South discovered rice would grow in the sea island region they sought out these Africans for their skills and knowledge needed to develop and build irrigation, dams and earthworks.

Come to this symposium to hear from scholars and first hand experiences of West Africans and Gullah on cultural similarities and common practices. Seating for this program is limited.

4. THE GEORGIA MASS CHOIR

Don’t miss this once-in-a lifetime performance!

The acclaimed and world renowned Georgia Mass Choir will be making their Lowcountry debut on Friday, February 19.The American gospel ensemble, founded by lead vocalist and songwriter Rev. Milton Biggham, will present a soul-stirring, foot tapping and hand clapping performance of their award-winning hit songs. This event will be at the Visual Performing Arts Center at Hilton Head High School, 70 Wilburn Rd. Hilton Head Island, SC 29926.
